Passing in the Storm Mark 6:45-56 June 27, 2010 Question: I feel like I’m getting nowhere in the Christian life. What should I do? Affirmation: It is when we realize that Jesus is always with us that we can make progress in what He has called us to do. False Perceptions 45Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray. Mark 6:45-46 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.John 6:15 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them.Mark 6:48a 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" 41They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"Mark 4:39-41 True Conditions 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them,Mark 6:48 19 And the LORD said, "I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the LORD, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. Exodus 33:19 50 They were all terrified when they saw him. But Jesus spoke to them at once. "Don’t be afraid," he said. "Take courage! I am here!"Mark 6:50 NLT 14 God said to Moses, "I am who I am . This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.' " Exodus 3:14 33"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33
Needs Met 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them,Mark 6:52 12They went out and preached that people should repent. 13They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them. Mark 6:12-13 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.Mark 6:56 16 But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.II Corinthians 3:16-18 12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.John 14:12-14 "He came treading the waves; and so He puts all the swelling tumults of life under His feet. Christians – why afraid?" St. Augustine
"When You’re Running on Empty" Mark 6:30-43 June 20, 2010 Question: I don’t have what it takes to be a good Christian. How can God expect it? Affirmation: It is when we realize what we can’t do we find out what God can do through us. Running on Empty The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to Him all they had done and taught. Mark 6:30 They went out and preached that people should repent. They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them. Mark 6:12-13 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, He said to them, "Come with Me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. Mark 6:31-32 For He grants sleep to those He loves. Psalms 127:2 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. Mark 6:33 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So He began teaching them many things. Mark 6:34 "`For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I Myself will search for My sheep and look after them. As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after My sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness. Ezekiel 34:11-12 By this time it was late in the day, so His disciples came to Him. "This is a remote place," they said, "and it's already very late. Send the people away so they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat." Mark 6:35-36 We Can’t! He Can But He answered, "You give them something to eat." Mark 6:37 He asked this only to test him, for He already had in mind what He was going to do. John 6:6 They said to Him, "That would take eight months of a man's wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?" Mark 6:37 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, He gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then He gave them to His disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. They all ate and were satisfied, Mark 6:41-42 "How many loaves do you have?" He asked. "Go and see." When they found out, they said, "Five--and two fish." Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. Mark 6:38-40 And the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand. Mark 6:43-44 "Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." Matthew 11:28-
June 13 was Sunday School Sunday so the Sermon was brief due to the Gospel being taught by the Sunday School classes.
"Haunted by the Holy" Mark 6:14-16 June 6, 2010 Question: Why won’t Christianity stay in its "proper" place? Affirmation: If Christ is not the center of your life the pressures of competing priorities will cause you to collapse. The Pressures of Priorities When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Matthew 2:16 He replied, "Go tell that fox, `I will drive out demons and heal people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach My goal.' Luke 13:32 But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and all the other evil things he had done, Luke 3:19 Haunted by the Holy For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had married. Mark 6:17 Because Herod was in awe of John and was protecting him, knowing he was a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard him, he would be very disturbed, yet he would hear him gladly. Mark 6:20 HCSB Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. Mark 4:18-19 Collapse in Crisis Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you." And he promised her with an oath, "Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom." She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" "The head of John the Baptist," she answered. At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter." Mark 6:21-25 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. Mark 6:26-28 On hearing this, Pilate asked if the Man was a Galilean. When he learned that Jesus was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see Him. From what he had heard about Him, he hoped to see him perform some miracle. He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer. The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing Him. Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate. Luke 23:6-11 Result That day Herod and Pilate became friends--before this they had been enemies. Luke 23:12 But when Herod heard this, he said, "John, the man I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!" Mark 6:16 But the one who hears My words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete." Luke 6:49 Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me." When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. Matthew 19:21-22 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." Joshua 24:15

"A God’s Eye View" I Samuel 6:6-13 June 28, 2009 Question: What sort of resume is God looking for? Answer: The LORD looks at the heart so that He can fill it and mold it. The LORD looks at the heart Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. I Samuel 16:7 The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. He said to them, "You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is detestable in God’s sight. Luke 16:14-15 Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. I Corinthians 1:26 His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor His delight in the legs of a man; The LORD delights in those who fear Him, who put their hope in His unfailing love. Psalm 147:10-11 The LORD fills the heart Then the LORD said, "Rise and anoint him; he is the one." I Samuel 16:12 And from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David with power. I Samuel 16:13 And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Joel 2:28 The LORD molds the heart Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Psalm 51:10-12 Now the LORD is Spirit, and where the Spirit of the LORD is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the LORD’s glory, are being transformed into His likeness with ever increasing glory, which comes from the LORD, who is the Spirit. II Corinthians 3:17-18
Better Than Sacrifice I Samuel 15:13-23 June 21, 2009 Question: Why doesn’t God honor all I do as a sacrifice to Him? Answer: Samuel gets to the heart of the matter when He tells Saul, "To obey is better than sacrifice". Obey Remember what the Amalakites did to you along the way when you came out of Egypt. When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and cut off all who lay behind; they had no fear of God. When the LORD your God gives you rest from all the enemies around you in the land He is giving you to possess as an inheritance, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven. Do not forget! Deuteronomy 25:17-19 But Saul and the army spared Agag and the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves and lambs – everything that was good. These they were unwilling to destroy completely, but everything that was despised and weak they totally destroyed. I Samuel 15:9 "Sacrifice" When Samuel reached him, Saul said, "The LORD bless you! I have carried out the LORD’s instructions." But Samuel said, "What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle I hear?" I Samuel 15:13-14 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God you will not despise. Psalm 51:17 The Heart of the Matter The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering He did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But, if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it." Genesis 4:4-7 For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has rejected you as king. I Samuel 15:23 Humble yourselves before the LORD, and He will lift you up. James 4:10 Since you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Colossians 3:1 Dear children, let us love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. This then is how we know we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in His presence whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and He knows everything. I John 3:18-20
I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. Ephesians 3:16-17
Hand Off Psalm 145:1-7 June 14, 2009 Question: How do we "commend" our faith to our children? Answer: We declare in awe and in praise and in truth. Awe Generation after generation stand in awe of Your work; each one tells stories of your mighty acts. Psalm 145:4 MSG Hear O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These are the commands I give you today to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 6:4-7 Praise One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts. Psalm 145:4 NASV For the grave can not praise You, death can not sing Your praise; those who go down to the pit can not hope in Your faithfulness. The living, the living – they praise You, as I am doing today; fathers tell their children about Your faithfulness. Isaiah 38:18-19 Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so you don’t forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. Deuteronomy 4:9 Declare Sing to Him, sing praise to Him; tell of His wonderful acts. Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice. Look to the LORD and His strength; seek His face always. Remember the wonders He has done, His miracles, and the judgments He has pronounced, O descendants of Israel His servant, O sons of Jacob, His chosen ones. I Chronicles 16:9-13 And when He gave thanks, He broke it and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me." I Corinthians 11:24 "One thing I do know, I was blind but now I see!" John 9:25 "I have now disposed of all my property to my family; there is one thing more I wish I could give them, and that is the Christian religion. If they had this, and I had not given them one shilling, they would be rich; but if they had not that, and I have given them all the world, they would be poor." Patrick Henry "Last Will and Testament" Posterity shall serve Him; future generations will be told bout the LORD. They will proclaim His righteousness to a people yet unborn – for He has done it. Psalm 22:30-31
Who is Your King? I Samuel 8:4-9 June 7, 2009 Question: How can I deal with all that seeks to control my life? Answer: Life’s revolution begins when we realize, "There is no king but Jesus. What Makes a King? So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. They said to him, "You are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have." 1 Samuel 8:4-5 And the LORD told him: "Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 1 Samuel 8:7-8 "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. Matthew 6:24 Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, "The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, `Here it is,' or `There it is,' because the kingdom of God is within you." Luke 17:20-21 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15 Who is your King? But the people refused to listen to Samuel. "No!" they said. "We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles." 1 Samuel 8:19-20 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman." For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." Genesis 3:4-5 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. Romans 1:21-23 But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered. John 19:15 The King Reigns Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will do." 1 Samuel 8:9 Instead, they were longing for a better country--a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. Hebrews 11:16 In a loud voice they sang: "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!" Revelation 5:12 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:8-11
Ephesians 2:19-21 What is a real church like? A Community A Family A Living Home of the Holy Spirit of God
1 Peter 2:9-10 How is the church supposed to look to the world? Who are we? What do we do? Deuteronomy 6:4-9 Listen Up! Who is Number One? Response Impress
Matthew 5:13-16 How do we maintain our vitality as a church when so many
churches have lost theirs? Salt Light City on a Hill No Place to Hide Psalm 133 Division Now, therefore, the sword will never depart your house, because you despised Me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own. 2 Samuel 12:10 Anointed in Unity Flowing out of Unity Source of Unity |
