"What You Need for the Journey"

Mark 6:7-13

May 30, 2010

Question: In my Christian life, what can I depend upon?

Affirmation: Jesus sent His disciples out with only the essentials, so that they could learn what they needed.

What They Had Seen

Teaching: Mark 4:1-33

Authority: Mark 4:35-5:20

Healing: Mark 5:21-43

Rejection: Mark 6:1-6

How They Were Sent

"Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by My Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in My name, there am I with them."

Matthew 18:19-20

One witness is not enough to convict a man accused of any crime or offense he may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.

Deuteronomy 19:15

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

1 John 4:4

Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Matthew 28:18-20

I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in Me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in My name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask Me for anything in My name, and I will do it.

John 14:12-14

For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.

Hebrews 13:14

Give us today our daily bread.

Matthew 6:11

So do not worry, saying, `What shall we eat?' or `What shall we drink?' or `What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 6:31-33

What They Did

Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave, as a testimony against them."

Mark 6:10-11

But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. When He comes, He will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in Me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see Me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

John 16:7-11

They went out and preached that people should repent. They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.

Mark 6:12-13

And He made known to us the mystery of His will according to His good pleasure, which He purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment--to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under One head, even Christ.

Ephesians 1:9-10

"Familiarity Breeds"

Mark 6:1-6

May 23, 2010

Question: Why don’t people accept Christ?

Affirmation: We can be so sure we know we don’t see so we need to really look.

"Know"

Jesus left there and went to His hometown, accompanied by His disciples. When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard Him were amazed. "Where did this man get these things?" they asked. "What's this wisdom that has been given Him, that He even does miracles!

Mark 6:1-2

The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it is written: "The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Then He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on Him, and He began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."

Luke 4:17-21

All spoke well of Him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from His lips. "Isn't this Joseph's son?" they asked.

Luke 4:22

Jesus said to them, "Surely you will quote this proverb to Me: "Physician, heal Yourself! Do here in Your hometown what we have heard that You did in Capernaum.'" "I tell you the truth," he continued, "no prophet is accepted in his hometown. I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed--only Naaman the Syrian." All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. They got up, drove Him out of the town, and took Him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw Him down the cliff.

Luke 4:23-29

When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of Him, for they said, "He is out of His mind."

Mark 3:21

Don’t See

Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't His sisters here with us?" And they took offense at Him.

Mark 6:3

They tripped over the little they knew about Him and fell, sprawling. And they never got any further.

Mark 6:3b MSG

Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the "stumbling stone." As it is written: "See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who trusts in Him will never be put to shame."

Romans 9:32-33

He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. And He was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.

Mark 6:5-6

Jesus said to them, "Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor."

Mark 6:4

Really Look

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor

Isaiah 61:1-2

But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because He suffered death, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.

Hebrews 2:9

Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

1 Corinthians 1:22-24

The Touch

Mark 5:24-34

May 16, 2010

Question: Why is faith not enough?

Affirmation: It is the focus on Christ that brings faith to fulfillment.

Floundering

And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.

Mark 5:25

She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.

Mark 5:26

"`When a woman has a discharge of blood for many days at a time other than her monthly period or has a discharge that continues beyond her period, she will be unclean as long as she has the discharge, just as in the days of her period. Any bed she lies on while her discharge continues will be unclean, as is her bed during her monthly period, and anything she sits on will be unclean, as during her period. Whoever touches them will be unclean; he must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean till evening. Leviticus 15:25-27

Faith

Because she thought, "If I just touch His clothes, I will be healed."

Mark 5:28

Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.

Acts 5:14-15

God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.

Acts 19:11-12

"`If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes." Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!"

Mark 9:23-24

If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, `Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. "

Matthew 17:20

Focus

"For if I can only touch His clothes," she kept saying, "I shall be alright."

Mark 5:28 Phillips

Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:13-14

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 12:2

Fulfillment

At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from Him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched My clothes?" "You see the people crowding against You," His disciples answered, "and yet You can ask, ‘Who touched Me?'" But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.

Mark 5:30-32

Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched Him and how she had been instantly healed.

Luke 8:47

That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.

Romans 10:9-10

He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering."

Mark 5:34

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Romans 5:1

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

2 Corinthians 3:17-18

"Talitha Koum"

Mark 5:21-23, 35-43

May 9, 2010

Question: Where is God when I need Him?

Affirmation: In Jesus God proves He is always there.

Desperation

Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there. Seeing Jesus, he fell at His feet and pleaded earnestly with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and put Your hands on her so that she will be healed and live."

Mark 5:22-23

Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, O LORD, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait in expectation. You are not a God who takes pleasure in evil; with You the wicked cannot dwell.

Psalms 5:1-4

Delay

At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from Him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched My clothes?" "You see the people crowding against You," His disciples answered, "and yet You can ask, `Who touched Me?'" But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.

Mark 5:30-32

Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD; O Lord, hear my voice. Let Your ears be attentive to My cry for mercy. If You, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in His word I put my hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.

Psalms 130:1-6

Despair

While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. "Your daughter is dead," they said. "Why bother the teacher any more?"

Mark 5:35

He went in and said to them, "Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep." But they laughed at Him.

Mark 5:39-40

When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet Him, but Mary stayed at home. "Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

John 11:20-21

My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Why are You so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry out by day, but You do not answer, by night, and am not silent.

Psalms 22:1-2

Deliverance

Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, "Don't be afraid; just believe."

Mark 5:36

After He put them all out, He took the child's father and mother and the disciples who were with Him, and went in where the child was.

Mark 5:40

He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum!" (Which means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!").

Mark 5:41

Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by Him we cry, "Abba, Father." The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in His sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Romans 8:14-17

What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all--how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?

Romans 8:31-32

Mark 5:1-20

Graverobbers

May 2, 2010

Question: How can I stand up in such a scary world?

Affirmation: Jesus has conquered and says to us "Fear not". Do we believe Him?

Confrontation

They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet Him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain.

Mark 5:1-3

For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

Mark 5:4-5

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

Ephesians 2:1-2

When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of Him. He shouted at the top of his voice, "What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that You won't torture me!" For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of this man, you evil spirit!"

Mark 5:6-8

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,

Isaiah 61:1

Conquest

Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is Legion," he replied, "for we are many." And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area. A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. The demons begged Jesus, "Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them." He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

Mark 5:9-13

"What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have You come here to torture us before the appointed time?"

Matthew 8:29

And they begged Him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.

Luke 8:31

For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment;

2 Peter 2:4

Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:6-11

Cost

Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man--and told about the pigs as well. Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.

Mark 5:14-17

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Ephesians 6:12

When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. "Oh, my lord, what shall we do?" the servant asked. "Don't be afraid," the prophet answered. "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them." And Elisha prayed, "O LORD, open his eyes so he may see." Then the LORD opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

2 Kings 6:15-17

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

1 John 4:4

As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with Him. Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you." So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

Mark 5:18-20

What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all--how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died--more than that, Who was raised to life--is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: "For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered." No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:31-39

I Samuel 7:10-13: "Ebenezer"

May 31, 2009

Question: Why has there been no revival around here?

Answer: Samuel shows what is really needed for a true revival.

Realization

It was a long time, twenty years in all, that the ark remained at Kiraith Jearim, and all the people of Israel mourned and sought the LORD.

I Samuel 7:2

She named the boy Ichabod, saying, "The glory has departed Israel." – Because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and husband. She said, "The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured."

I Samuel 4:21-22

"But if they will confess their sins and the sins of their fathers – their treachery against Me, which made Me hostile toward them so I sent them into the land of their enemies – then when their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and they pay for their sin I will remember My covenant with Jacob and My covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land."

Leviticus 26:40-42

Repentance

And Samuel said to the whole house of Israel, "If you are returning to the LORD with all your hearts, then rid yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths and commit yourselves to the LORD and serve Him only, and He will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines." So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served the LORD only.

I Samuel 7:3-4

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

I John 1:9

Then Samuel said, "Assemble all Israel at Mizpah and I will intercede with the LORD for you." When they had assembled at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out before the LORD. On that day they fasted and confessed, "We have sinned against the LORD." And Samuel was leader of all Israel at Mizpah.

I Samuel 7:5-6

Therefore confess your sins to each other so you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

James 5:16

Revival

When the Philistines heard that Israel had assembled at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines came up to attack them. And when the Israelites heard this they were afraid because of the Philistines. They said to Samuel, "Do not stop crying out to the LORD our God for us, that He may rescue us from the Philistines."… He cried out to the LORD on Israel’s behalf and the LORD answered him.

I Samuel 7:7-9

If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and healed their land.

II Chronicles 7:14

While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near Israel to engage them in battle. But that day the LORD thundered with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic that they were routed before the Israelites. The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Car.

I Samuel 7:10-11

Remembrance

Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

Mark 9:8

Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far the LORD has helped us." So the Philistines were subdued and did not invade Israelite territory again. Throughout Samuel’s lifetime the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines.

I Samuel 7:12-13

Posterity will serve Him; future generations will be told about the LORD. They will proclaim to a people yet unborn – for He has done it.

Psalm 22:31

Who’s Number One?

Colossians 3:18-4:6

Question: Isn’t the Bible just a tool of oppression?

Answer: The Gospel gives us the only way to find true freedom in our relationships.

Reaction

Arise, O LORD! Deliver me, O my God! Strike all my enemies on the jaw; break the teeth of the wicked.

Psalm 3:7

And you, son of man, do not be afraid of them or their words. Do not be afraid, tough briers and thorns are all around you and you live among scorpions. Do not be afraid of what they say or terrified by them, though they are a rebellious house.

Ezekiel 2:6

The Pharisees …They tie up heavy loads and put them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves will not lift a finger to move them.

Matthew 23:4

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

John 8:32

Redeemer

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross! Therefore God has exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him a name that is above every name.

Philippians 2:5-9

The oath He swore to our father Abraham: to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and enable us to serve Him without fear.

Luke 1:73-74

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because He first loved us.

I John 4:18-19

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it in the name of Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Colossians 3:17

Revolution

What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Romans 8:31

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

Colossians 3:1-3

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Ephesians 5:21

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.

James 4:10

Some trust in chariots and some in horses,

Samuel's Ebenezer
So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated and every man fled to his tent.  The slaughter was very great: Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers.  The Ark of God was captured, and Eli's two sons, Hophi and Phinehas, died.        1 Samuel 4:10-11

The Great Ebenezer
And then He took bread, and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body given for you; do this in remembrance of Me."                                        Luke 22:19
As you come to Him, the living stone - rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to Him - you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a royal priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.  For in Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen precious cornerstone, and one who trust in Him will never be put to shame."                                    1 Peter 2:4-6

"The Root of Courage"
May 18, 2008
Acts 4:13-20

Question: How do I, as a Christian, find the courage to stand for what is right?
Answer: Looking at Simon Peter shows us from where true Christian courage comes.

Confidence
Jesus replied to Simon, "Don't be afraid!  From now on you will be fishing for people!"  As soon as they landed they left everything and followed Jesus.        Luke 4:10-11 NLT
After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with Him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone.  There He was transfigured before them.
                                                                                                             Mark 9:2
Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
                                                                                                             Matthew 16:6
"Lord, if it is you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."
                                                                                                             Matthew 14:28
Peter said to Him, "Even if everyone else deserts You, I never will."  "Peter," Jesus replied, "the truth is, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times."  "No!" Peter insisted, "Not even if I have to die with you!  I will never deny You!"            Mark 14:29-31 NLT

But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you are talking about."  And as soon as he had said these words, the rooster crowed.  At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter.  peter remembered that the Lord had said, "Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny Me three times."  And Peter left the court yard, crying bitterly.    Luke 22:60-62 NLT

See John 21:1-19

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain to you ...... this was what was spoken by the prophet Joel: In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit on all people....."
                                                                                                                  Acts 2:14-21
"Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat.  But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail.  And when you have turned back strengthen your brothers."
                                                                                                                   Luke 22:31-32

Courage
And the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.  To Him be the power forever and ever.  Amen                                                             1 Peter 5:10-11

"Spirit Life"
May 11, 2008
Romans 8:9-11
Rev. Peter Wood

Problem: I want to act like a Christian, but I lack self control.
Proclamation: The key is not Self control, but Spirit control: which requires surrender to God's Spirit in Christ.

Controlled by "Sinful Nature"
You are no longer ruled by your desires, but by God's Spirit who lives in you.
                                                                                                                Romans 8:9 CEV
They are going to end up in hell, because their god is their bodily desires.  They are proud of what they should be ashamed of, and they think only of what belongs to this world.  We, however, are citizens of heaven.                                                          Philippians 3:19-20 TEV
These are the men who divided you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.                                                                                                      Jude 19

Conquered by the Spirit
We are therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
                                                                                                                Romans 6:4
Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching.  My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him."                                John 14:23
Don't  you know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?
                                                                                                                  1Coritnthians 3:16
I have been crucified with Christ and I no linger live, but Christ lives in me.  The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, Who loves me and gave Himself for me.
                                                                                                                    Galatians 2:20

Controlled by the Spirit
Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you - guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.                                                                                                   1 Timothy 1:14
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves His Child as well.  This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out His commandments.  This is love for God: obey His commands.  And His commandments are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world, even our faith.  Who overcomes the world?  Only he who believes Jesus is the Son of God.
                                                                                                                     1 John 5:1-5
But the fruit of Spirit is love, joy peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.  Against such things there is no law.  Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.  Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.                                                 Galatians 5:22-25

Hebrews 4:14-16
Rev. Peter Wood

Problem: Why does "trying to be a good Christian" lead to spiritual exhaustion so much of the time?
Solution: As the Ascension proclaims, Jesus has overcome the barrier between us and God, Who now call us to rest in Hs presence.

"Therefore"
There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his won work, just as God did from His.                Hebrews 4:9-10
So don't let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths.  For these rules were only shadows of the real thing, Christ Himself.                                                                         Colossians 2:16-17 NLT

The Great High Priest
See Leviticus 16 - Yom Kippur
For what the Law was powerless to in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering.  And so He condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the Law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.
                                                                                                             Romans 8:3-4
God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God.                                                                                                     II Corinthians 5:21
But we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, purifies us from all sin.                 1 John 1:9

Like Us
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived  by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended into hell.                                                                           Apostles' Creed
Therefore, it was necessary for Jesus to be in every respect like us, His brothers and sisters, so that He could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God.  He then could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people.  Since He Himself has gone through suffering and temptation, He is able to help us when we are being tempted.
                                                                                                                Hebrews 2:17-18 NLT

To Boldly Go
So let us go boldly to the throne of our gracious God.  There we will receive His mercy and we will find grace to help us when we need it.                                          Hebrews 4:16 NLT
"All the king's officials and people of the royal provinces know that for any man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned the king has but one law: that he be put to death."                                                                                Esther 4:11
So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, "It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared."                                                                                     Genesis 32:30
And I heard a loud voice from the Throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and He will live with them.  They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God.  He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.  There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."        Revelation 21:3-4
