"Look What I Got!" Luke 2:15-20 December 27, 2009 Question: How is a Christian supposed to respond to the message of Christ’s birth? Affirmation: The world might ignore it, reject it, or treat it as "amazing", but we are to ponder it and then rejoice and tell God came! Ignore And she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped Him in cloths and placed Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:7 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written: "`But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.' " Matthew 2:4-6 But we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength. 1 Corinthians 1:23-25 Reject When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: "A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more." Matthew 2:16-18 But they shouted, "Take Him away! Take Him away! Crucify Him!" "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered. John 19:15 Amazed And all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. Luke 2:18 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, "Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian." Acts 26:28 KJV "`Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.' " Acts 13:41 Ponder But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. Luke 2:19 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. Acts 1:14 Rejoice and Tell "I tell you," he replied, "If they keep quiet, the stones will cry out." Luke 19:40 While He was blessing them, He left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped Him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God. Luke 24:51-53 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8

"The Gift" Romans 6:23 December 20, 2009 Question: Why should I care about the Baby Jesus? Affirmation: The best gift is the one you most need, most want, and can’t get for yourself and Jesus is the absolute best gift God could give. The Most Needed For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away. 1 John 2:16-17 There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. Proverbs 16:25 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7:24-25 An angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." Matthew 1:20-21 The Most Wanted See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. Deuteronomy 30:15 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Psalms 51:11-12 He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. He came to that which was His own, but His own did not receive Him. Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God-- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. John 1:10-14 You Can’t Get for Yourself As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, Ephesians 2:1 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?" "Yes, Lord," she told him, "I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world." John 11:25-27 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:8-11 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 The Most Appreciated When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." Luke 2:15 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the One who has been born king of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him." Matthew 2:1-2 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. Luke 2:20 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: "Sovereign Lord, as You have promised, You now dismiss Your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared in the sight of all people, a Light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to Your people Israel." Luke 2:28-32
"How Much Does It Cost" Matthew 2:9-11 & Isaiah 53:1-6 December 13, 2009
Question: Why did it cost so much to bring us back to God? Affirmation: The surety of God’s justice can only be matched by the power of God’s love in Jesus Christ. Who Has Believed Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? Isaiah 53:1 But we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1 Corinthians 1:23-24 "For God so loved the world that He gave His One and Only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. John 3:16-17 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13 All We Like Sheep We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; Isaiah 53:6 a This is what the LORD says: "Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD." Jeremiah 17:5 If a person sins and does what is forbidden in any of the LORD's commands, even though he does not know it, he is guilty and will be held responsible. Leviticus 5:17 If a person sins because he does not speak up when he hears a public charge to testify regarding something he has seen or learned about, he will be held responsible. Leviticus 5:1 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 Laid on Him And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6 b Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree." Galatians 3:13 You must not leave his body on the tree overnight. Be sure to bury him that same day, because anyone who is hung on a tree is under God's curse. You must not desecrate the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance. Deuteronomy 21:23 But we see Jesus, Who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because He suffered death, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for Whom and through Whom everything exists, should make the Author of their salvation perfect through suffering. Hebrews 2:9-10 Open the Gift As you come to Him, the living Stone--rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to Him-- 1 Peter 2:4 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to Him, and He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases." Matthew 8:16-17 He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by His wounds you have been healed. For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. 1 Peter 2:24-25
"Emmanuel!" Matthew 2:9-11 & Malachi 3:1-4 December 6, 2009 Question: Why did the "status quo" get so upset about the baby Jesus? Affirmation: Christmas is not about a baby, it’s about a revolution Revolution The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the One who subjected it, in hope Romans 8:19-20 "I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your assemblies. Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! Amos 5:21-24 Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. "It is written," he said to them, "`My house will be called a house of prayer,' but you are making it a `den of robbers.' " Matthew 21:12-13 Refining He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; He will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men, who will bring offerings in righteousness, Malachi 3:3 "I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Matthew 3:11 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Surely You desire truth in the inner parts; You teach me wisdom in the inmost place. Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice. Psalms 51:5-8 Then one of the elders asked me, "These in white robes--who are they, and where did they come from?" I answered, "Sir, you know." And he said, "These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Revelation 7:13-14 Righteousness God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. II Corinthians 5:21 You will be for Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites." Exodus 19:6 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. I Peter 2:9-10 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Psalms 23:1-6

"What Child Is This?" Philippians 2:5-11 December 7, 2008 What should I give Jesus for His birthday? When we look at what Jesus gave up and what was gained we know what is called for from us. What Jesus gave up Who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. Philippians 2:6 So the Word became human and lived here on earth among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen His glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father. John 1:14 NLT And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross! Philippians 2:8 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command. John 15:12-14 What was gained Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, Philippians 2:9 That at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow on heaven and on earth and under the earth, Philippians 2:10 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in Me will do even greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in My name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask Me for anything in My name, and I will do it. John 14:12-14 And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:11 What is called for Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Philippians 2:5 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be very last, and the servant of all." He took a child and had him stand among them. Taking him in His arms, He said to them, "Whoever welcomes one of these little children in My name welcomes Me; and whoever welcomes Me does not welcome Me but the One who sent Me." Mark 9:35-37 This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us. I John 4:9-12 |
