"Because of Who You Are" I John 2: 12-17 September 27, 2009 Question: How do I keep my priorities straight? Affirmation: By remembering who we are in Christ we can keep our eyes on where we’re going. Who We Are I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name. 1 John 2:12 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, protect them by the power of Your Name--the name You gave Me--so that they may be one as We are one. John 17:11 I write to you, dear children, because you have known the Father. 1 John 2:13 My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of My Father's hand. I and the Father are one. John 10:27-30 I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. 1 John 2:13 & 14 In the beginning was the Word...In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. John 1:1 & 5 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God…The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:12-14 I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. 1 John 2:13 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 1 John 4:4 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God. Revelation 2:7 I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one. 1 John 2:14 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Where We’re Going Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world. 1 John 2:15-16 By faith Abraham…For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. Hebrews 11:8 & 10 Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear. For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 1 Peter 1:17-19 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. 1 John 2:17 But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. Luke 6:24 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. John 17:14-18
"How Does That Tune Go?" I John 2:1-10 September 20, 2009 Question: What is the mark of a Christian? Affirmation: The test of real Christianity is Christ-produced love. The Old Command Here is the test by which we can be sure that we know Him: Do we keep His commands 1 John 2:3 NEB On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" "What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?" He answered: "`Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind' ; and, `Love your neighbor as yourself.' " "You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live." Luke 10:25-28 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. Deuteronomy 6:4-5 Love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD. Leviticus 19:18 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another." John 13:34-35 But I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin. Romans 7:23-25 The New Way This old commandment – to love one another – is the same message you heard before yet it is also new. Jesus lived the truth, and you are also living it. 1 John 2:7 NLT Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. 1 John 2:6 The man who says, "I know Him," but does not do what He commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys His word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in Him: 1 John 2:4-5 Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble. 1 John 2:10 Getting Back But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him. 1 John 2:11 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have One who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 1 John 2:1 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:2 For in Christ, neither our most conscientious religion nor disregard of religion amounts to anything. What matters is something far more interior: Faith expressed in love. Galatians 5:6 MSG
To Tell the Truth I John 1:1-10 September 13, 2009 Question: How do I get past my self deception? Answer: It is because of Jesus Christ that we can finally stand the truth and stop living the lie. The Lie - Rationalization If we refuse to admit that we are sinners, then we live in a world of illusion and truth becomes a stranger to us. 1 John 1:8 Phillips All have turned aside, they have together become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. Psalms 14:3 There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is right and never sins. Ecclesiastes 7:20 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6 The Light - Revealing This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1:5-8 Which God will bring about in his own time--God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen. 1 Timothy 6:15-16 "Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty." Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for." Isaiah 6:5-7 The Light - Reacting This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:22-23 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid." John 8:12-13 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." John 3:19-21 If I had not done among them what no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. John 15:24 For if we take up the attitude "we have not sinned", we flatly deny God’s diagnosis of our condition and cut ourselves off from what he has to say. John 1:10 Phillips The Life - Restoration If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Proverbs 28:13 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. James 5:16 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:13-14 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first fruits of all he created. James 1:17-18
Hands on Faith I John 1:1-4 September 6, 2009 Question: How are different types of Christians suppose to get along? Affirmation: It is by being close to Christ that we are close to each other. John’s Dilemma Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. Revelation 2:4 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. I John 1:3 John’s Declaration We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. II Peter 1:16 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched – this we proclaim concerning the Word of Life. I John 1:1 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." John 14:6 The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 John’s Directions The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you eternal life, which is from the Father and has appeared to us. I John 1:2 Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. John 15:4 My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in Me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as You are in Me and I am in You. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that You have sent Me. John 17:20-21 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. I John 1:3 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know you have eternal life. I John 5:12-13 We write this to make our joy complete. I John 1:4
