The Cleanliness of Godliness

Mark 7:1-23

July 4, 2010

Question: Aren’t Christians just judgmental hypocrites?

Affirmation: Judgmental Religion has nothing to do with real Christianity

Religion

5So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, "Why don't Your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with 'unclean' hands?"

Mark 7:5

21"Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"? 22These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. 23Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

Colossians 2:21-23

15Nothing outside a man can make him 'unclean' by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him 'unclean.' "

Mark 7:15

9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

Jeremiah 17:9

10As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one;

Romans 3:10

6He replied, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: " 'These people honor Me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from Me. 7They worship Me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'

Mark 7:6-7

9And He said to them: "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!

Mark 7:9

14The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." 15If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

Galatians 5:14-15

20For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:20

Relationship

6You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.

Romans 5:6

18For Christ died for sins once for all, the Righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit,

I Peter 3:18

16I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17For in the gospel righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

Romans 1:16-17

21God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

II Corinthians 5:21

22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

Galatians 5:22-26
